How To Curb This Issue?

Image
Is it wrong to use plastic? The answer is no. However, it becomes an offense when plastic is used only once and then discarded. Disposal of plastic after only one use causes dumping of plastic waste and this damages the environment. The use of disposable plastics is the most important and popular phrase for 2018 especially in the context of fighting for environmental sustainability. In fact, for 2019, this phrase remains important because the "war" to stop the use of disposable plastics is a difficult and long struggle as society is accustomed to the practice of disposing of plastics after using it only once. Yes for Organic Bags, No for Plastic Bags Source: Momspresso To encourage community involvement and understanding in the struggle to stop the use of disposable plastics then we need to look at the amount of plastics produced and its effects. A study of plastic pollutionconducted by Jenna R. Jambeck with several other researchers and published in a refereeing journal...

Plastic Pollution in Malaysia

Plastic Pollution At The Beach Source: The Star Sometimes there are things that we do not see the impact individually, but it becomes a big problem when those things are seen collectively. For example, the issue of garbage disposal, let's say a person disposes of small waste such as candy wrappers. Individually, this thing may be seen as a small thing, because the candy wrapper is not that big. Just, try to imagine there are a million people throwing away this candy wrapper, must the impact be greater? In Malaysia, this is one of the thinking problems we are facing. Many people think that if people do something, it will not have a big impact. The fact is that when more and more people think like this, then it becomes a disaster. One of them are... The amount of plastic-related carbon emissions in Malaysia is higher than the combined Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines An analysis of Asia's largest plastic consumption shows Malaysians are the largest consumers of plastics, according ...

How Plastics Are Made

Plastic Pollution that ends up in the sea.  Photograph:   Paulo Oliveira/Alamy Stock Photo Plastic is made up of elements such as carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, chlorine, sulfur, and nitrogen. Initially, plastic was made from natural materials such as animal horns, shellac (small insect secretions), and patchwork rubber. Plastic material can be divided into 2, that is: Thermoplastic  Thermoset The most important plastic materials are: - Polypropylene (PP) - carpet - Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) - pipe - High Density Polyethilene (HDPE) - bottle - Linear Low Density Polyethilene (LLDPE) - film - Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) - film - Polyester, thermoplastic (PETE) - soft drink bottle - Polystyrene (PS) - cassette - Phenolic - plywood glue In 1869, the first synthetic plastics were made of cellulose, which is a natural material derived from plants. Wesley Hyatt, an American inventor discovered that cellulose nitrate can be made into plastic by adding camphor . The first commercia...

The Impact of Plastic Pollution

If plastic is likened to an ocean, then this year most parts of the world have been submerged in water and may have turned into the city of Atlantis which Plato often mentions in his fictional works. The underwater city of Atlantis is just a fairy tale. However, the reality is that the earth is increasingly covered with plastic waste, at the same time turning the ocean into a garbage dump. It can be said that all the time, there will be video excerpts or short stories showing the misery of marine life around the world after having to fight to put aside all the garbage dumps for survival. Imagine your home is littered with rubbish coming from nowhere and answer honestly, are you able to survive when one by one family members die as a result of this pollution when you have no power to change the situation for the better. Plastic: An Overview

Plastic Pollution Source: Nur Inayah What makes plastic so dangerous? Plastic contamination is an inevitable global issue. This is because plastics are widely used in various daily activities. Due to its widespread use, plastics have become a major contributor to pollution in the oceans. Global statistics show that five trillion plastic bags are used every year and 13 million tons of them are dumped into the sea. Meanwhile, it is estimated that one million plastic bottles are bought every minute and 100,000 marine life is killed due to plastic every year. In Malaysia alone, an estimated nine billion plastics are used annually, and most end up in the oceans. This situation is so worrying because plastic is a component that does not easily decompose. Plastic will only break down into small particles and decompose when exposed to ultraviolet radiation, oxygen, high temperatures and the activity of microorganisms over a period of time. Plastic that breaks and decomposes in the sea will be...
